...to Love, Serve, and Share Christ
Meet Tommy Butler
Tommy Butler has been involved with both church music and public school music for nearly 40 years. He has earned both a Bachelor of Music and Master of Music at Stephen F. Austin State University in Nacogdoches, Texas. Post graduate and advanced studies in conducting and vocal pedagogy have been done at the University of North Texas in Denton, Texas and Southwestern University in Georgetown, Texas. Studies in computer based music software have been done with MIDI Synthesis Workshops based in Carson, Washington.
Tommy remains active in the Texas Music Educators Association and is currently serving as President for TMEA Region 21. School choirs have performed at the World’s Fair in Vancouver, Canada, combined with the University of Toronto Choral in Toronto, Canada, a 25 minute recital concert at Carnegie Hall in New York City, and as an honor choir at the state TMEA convention.
Over the years both church and school choirs have performed a wide variety of musical styles ranging from the choral/orchestra works of Handel, Mozart, Vivaldi, and others to contemporary works by Joseph Martin, John Leavitt, Robert Ray, and John Rutter to name a few.
“My goal is to bring quality music into the church that enhances worship and remains true to God’s word. Mixing and matching the many and varied musical styles available in today’s world is a constant challenge requiring much prayer, study, and support from the pastor, the choir, and the people of the church. As has been said before; I really like being at Whitehouse UMC!”
